To Be Srl è una PMI Innovativa, nata come startup nel 2016, che sviluppa soluzioni LiFi con l’intento di sfruttare le potenzialità della luce per connettere cose e persone in maniera sostenibile, soddisfare la crescente domanda di traffico dati e guidare la transizione verso una connessione veloce, sicura e sostenibile.

Il progetto LiFi di To Be concretizza in un’unica soluzione green i principi di transizione ecologica, digitale e delle infrastrutture di rete che sono propri del PNRR. Il LiFi è una tecnologia all’avanguardia che consente la trasmissione di dati ed informazioni attraverso la modulazione della luce LED. È in grado di offrire numerosi vantaggi, tra i quali una maggiore larghezza di banda e un’alta velocità di trasmissione dati che arriva oggi ad 1Gb/s e che arriverà nel 2025, secondo studi di settore, ad 1 Tbit/s. Già oggi, in laboratorio, è possibile raggiungere queste velocità che commercialmente si riusciranno ad ottenere soltanto con l’avvento del 6G di cui il LiFi è un precursore, in quanto la sesta generazione di connettività abbraccerà pienamente le frequenze Thz della luce, dal visibile al non visibile.

Lo spettro della luce, essendo 10’000 volte più ampio dello spettro radio dedicato al Wi-Fi, offre l’infrastruttura necessaria allo sviluppo delle industrie IoT, Industria 4.0 e SmartCity. Utilizzando la luce e non emettendo radiofrequenze, questa tecnologia può essere utilizzata in ambienti sensibili ed ostili alle interferenze come ospedali, aerei e basi militari. Inoltre, l’utilizzo di una soluzione che per fornire connettività sfrutta la luce, per sua natura circoscritta entro i limiti dello spazio di riferimento, tutela maggiormente da potenziali attacchi hacker esterni, rendendo la trasmissione di informazioni e dati veloce e sicura.

Ultima interessante caratteristica del LiFi è l’elevata precisione in termini di geolocalizzazione. È possibile, infatti, rilevare la posizione di un device e quindi anche di un utente, con un margine di errore di pochi centimetri. Un benchmark per il settore, soprattutto considerando che la tecnologia ad oggi più utilizzata per la localizzazione è il Bluetooth, che presenta margini di errore nell’ordine del metro. Il LiFi rientra pienamente tra le tecnologie utili a favorire l’accessibilità e l’inclusività delle persone diversamente abili in quanto offre una navigazione autonoma senza percorsi tattili, il calcolo di percorsi senza ostacoli per persone su sedia a rotelle, contenuti video in LIS per non udenti e contenuti audio-descrittivi per non vedenti ed ipovedenti.

Considerando le peculiarità del LiFi e tenendo conto delle differenti esigenze dei settori applicativi, To Be ha deciso di concentrarsi su due aspetti rilevanti: da una parte la connettività a banda ultralarga offrendo due soluzioni denominate LiFi Streaming e LiFi Point To Point, dall’altra parte la geolocalizzazione sviluppando un’apposita soluzione denominata LiFi Geolocation.

To Be Srl is an Innovative SME, born as a startup in 2016, which develops LiFi solutions with the aim of exploiting the potential of light to connect things and people in a sustainable way, satisfy the growing demand for data traffic and guide the transition towards a fast, secure and sustainable connectivity.

To Be‘s LiFi project embodies the principles of ecological, digital and network infrastructure transition that are typical of the NextGenEU in a single green solution. LiFi is a cutting-edge technology that allows the transmission of data and information through the modulation of the LED light. It is able to offer numerous advantages, including greater bandwidth and high data transmission speed which today reaches 1Gb/s and which will arrive in 2025, according to sector studies, at 1 Tbit/s. Already today, in the laboratory, it is possible to reach these speeds which will be commercially available only with the advent of 6G of which LiFi is a precursor, as the sixth generation of connectivity will fully embrace the THz frequencies of light, from visible to invisible.

The spectrum of light, being 10,000 times wider than the radio spectrum dedicated to Wi-Fi, offers the necessary infrastructure for the development of the IoT, Industry 4.0 and SmartCity industries. Using light and not emitting radio frequencies, this technology can be used in environments sensitive and hostile to interference such as hospitals, airplanes and military bases. Furthermore, the use of a solution that uses light to provide connectivity, which by its nature is limited within the limits of the reference space, provides greater protection against potential external hacker attacks, making the transmission of information and data fast and secure.

The last interesting feature of LiFi is the high precision in terms of geolocation. In fact, it is possible to detect the position of a device and therefore also of a user, with a margin of error of a few centimetres. A benchmark for the sector, especially considering that the most used technology for localization today is Bluetooth, which has margins of error in the order of a few metres. LiFi is also facilitating the accessibility and inclusiveness of people with disabilities as it offers autonomous navigation without tactile paths, the calculation of paths without obstacles for people in wheelchairs, video content in LIS for hearing and descriptive audio-content for the blind and visually impaired.

Considering the peculiarities of LiFi and taking into account the different needs of the application sectors, To Be has decided to focus on two relevant aspects: on the one hand, ultra-broadband connectivity by offering two solutions called LiFi Streaming and LiFi Point To Point, on the other hand, geolocation by developing a special solution called LiFi Geolocation.
